Epic wines are on the border line where art and crafts meet and unite. I started working on this range in 2015 with the idea to create a modern wine label design with non-traditional two-part label shape. Together with the brand owner and winemaker Simo Simov, we decided to call this wine range Epic because we wanted somehow to indicate that these wines are more special, and they are strongly influenced and even determined by the terroir of the winery. On the other hand, we also wanted a fresh modern wine label design that reflected the modern style of the wines. This is how Epic was born.
The story behind wine packaging design is the beginning of everything if you want to create successful product. A meaningful story is always the perfect foundation for every new brand and it is the perfect key to unlock consumers mind as well. Merul was not a new brand when I started working on it but it was strongly related with the oldest Bulgarian history dating back from the times of Thracian kings. So in this case study I will try to tell the story behind Merul wine packaging design and how it helped me create recognizable wine labels for this wine brand.
Custom winery logo design is something I do from the very first moment I started doing wine labels in 1998. In fact I changed the logos or did new ones for almost every winery I worked with thru the years. This story repeated with Oriachovitza winery and I am very happy and proud with the result and also because of the fact that their custom winery logo was a focus point of their new label design I was commissioned to create.

Creating abstract label design is always difficult but also very inspiring adventure for every designer. Contour makes no exception in this. Created exclusively for Karabunar Winery, Bulgaria, this new wine label turned into reflection of their famous wines and incredible terroir and vineyard location. The range depending on vintages consists from no less than 7-8 wines including, whites, rose and reds. I call it a long one and therefore difficult for creating recognizable color scheme for each of the wines in the range.
Dragomir Rose is a wine made with passion and knowledge by one of the most interesting and of course famous wineries in small Bulgaria – the Dragomir Estate Winery. Run by a family of two oenologists, Dragomir won its reputation of modern boutique winery. This Rose is not something out of the picture – It is as special and intriguing as everything they have done so far.

Erelia is a very new wine label I designed for one of the most amazing wineries in Bulgaria – the Rumelia Winery. Famous for its amazing red wines Erelia brand is probably the quintessence of everything they have created so far. Erelia is the old name of Smiletz Village near Panagyurishte where the vineyards are. The whole region is magical and is very famous because this is the land where the incredible Panagyurishte Treasure was found here in the middle of 20th century. There is a lot of history hidden here and it dates back some 400-300 years BC when this territory was ruled be the Thracian Kings.
Salla Estate is one of the most interesting wineries in Bulgaria. It is located in the heart of the famous Provadiya Plateau Sarta, only 60 km away from Varna. Nearby is the Muhaliysko Kale medieval fortress. The place is really ancient full with many artifacts dating back from the time of Stone Age till Middle Ages – a good reason to think of creating a modern heraldic label design.
The Deuce Brand Design story starts somewhere in the middle of 2016 when I met Lalo Geshev and after a few months Nikolay Kolev. Lalo is bass player and Nikolay is a drummer. Both are winemakers. Both are very different – Lalo is often floating up in the clouds while Nikolay is fully grounded. Lalo is making the reds, Nikolay – whites. They are friends, partners and they even play in the same band and what was quite evident to me that everything they do together was absolutely 50/50!
Early Birds is a new brand created for the mid-range wines of Stratsin Winery. It hides secret meaning closely related to people who run the winery. Here like in my SOULMATEs project I started from ground zero. Stratsin is a family winery so I decided to focus on family theme on one hand. On the other – these were their very first wines and they were really impatient to show them to the world. So this was all I was thinking of when I started brainstorming on this new brand. I wanted to create something memorable, something crazy but also something you would feel comfortable with… a symbol of family, love, tradition, generations, new beginning, etc.
This project started off well ahead of its completion. I knew I had to design a label for a limited edition of 300 bottles and this boosted my creativity. Still, it was all a maze. The people behind the project were two wine bloggers who were doing something way outside the box. In order to learn more about wine, they decided to go all in. They rented two rows of vines from a winery and dedicated a year to taking care of them. Then, they moved to the winery and carried out all the vinification practices. They waited for another year for the wine to age in a barrel and six more months for it to age in bottle. Exercising supreme patience they tackled all the challenges of packaging, promotion and selling.
SOULMATEs is very new project created for young Stratsin Winery. I started it in 2016 and it was printed in early 2017.
I began from ground zero – white sheet, pencil and a good doze of motivation. I had some pretty good impressions about the team – owners & winemakers – and in fact they were the reason to create a brand called SOULMATEs. It is an idea that came to me as a reflection of what I saw from their relations. It is a company of four people who made me think they share same ideas and live and work as best friends respecting each other and looking at the same direction on their way thru wine world.
This is my second try to create wine label with clover. The first one was done in 2011 and this brand new version is actually a major restyle of the original A Good Year wine label. The original release featured calligraphy, more texts and more colors. The redesigned version is significantly changed.
After our first contact with EZIMIT winery it was quite clear we have to start from the ground level to completion.
My first steps were focused on brand creation – I needed a memorable word and a story behind to tell with my label. Among few more Stardust was the choice of my hart and intuition and this is how all started.
Rumelia Syrah wine took its name from the name of the Cellar – Rumelia Wine Cellar. Based near Panagiyrishte, Bulgaria, this boutique winery is right in the center of the heart of Bulgaria’s best red wines. Rumelia is winery’s top premium brand and this it’s actually the birth of a new high level wine range. The word “red” has special and even sacred meaning here speaking of wine and especially speaking of this particular wine cellar. We were honored to design a label for their best wines.
Gaetan Rose wine label is part of the Gaetan brand but we decided to do a little bit different label. Rose wines have always been a special canvas for design ideas and creativity – not only in this particular case.
Vera Terra is the name of the latest exclusive rose wine we created for one of the most iconic wine producers in Bulgaria – the Black Sea Gold winery.
The name comes from Latin and means ‘true land’. It tells the audience that this wine is special and that it comes from one of the best regions in Bulgaria for white and rose wines – the Black Sea area. The label is a logical connection between the existing award-winning design for Salty Hills wines, the Vera Terra project and the sea.
